Bing Maps Now Uses Silverlight

Microsoft has released the final version of Bing Maps Silverlight, as well as the final version of Bing Maps Silverlight Control 1.0. Being a mainstream application I believe this will help increase Silverlight’s user base.

Some benefits of the Silverlight version over the AJAX version:

  • A new feature called Destination Maps. It uses vector based route geometries. Silverlight’s great for graphical functions such as this
  • A new feature called Local Events. It searches events in the area shown on screen. Again Silverlight is great for data driven features like this
  • It uses Deep Zoom (a built in feature of Silverlight)
  • It’s embeddable as a DLL. Most .Net developers would appreciate this

Why there’s no 64-bit Silverlight from Microsoft… yet

Ars has an article on why there’s no 64 bit Silverlight from Microsoft. Basically Microsoft are waiting for 64 bit OS’s to become more popular. It’s also interesting to note they they now claim that Silverlight now has a 45% penetration rate. That’s pretty good for a technology that’s still fairly new.

WordPress 2.8

I’ve updated this web site to use WordPress 2.8, the upgrade went smoothly.

If you have an old web site or are considering creating an online presence, WordPress is a wonderful product for publishing web sites. It’s a full content management system (CMS) as well as providing a news stream. There are thousands of plugins available, it’s easy to work with, and best of all it’s free (you still need a web server and all that). And us if you need help setting this up.

Progress

I’ve been marketing the business a little by targeting our home area, Sydney’s inner west. If you have any comments or feedback on this please use the comments link on the left.

I’ve also been slowly updating the older pages on this site. It’s good to have an updated web site, and by using WordPress it’s fast and easy to make changes. WordPress is highly recommended.

And in the background I’ve been putting together some systems to allow us to grow our customer base, more documentation, that sort of thing.

Web site updates

I’ve added a few more pages outlining the IT admin, support and development work I do. There isn’t much content yet, more will be added over time.

There’s also a support system in place to make it easier to provide technical support to you. I’ll be adding details of it to this site shortly.
